Types of Automotive Spare Parts: OE, OEM, and IAM – Which One to Choose?

In the automotive aftermarket sector, different types of spare parts coexist, which can create doubts for both professionals and end users. Choosing correctly between OE, OEM, and IAM is key to ensuring repair quality, optimizing costs, and maintaining vehicle performance.

At PCEX Automotive, we work with all these types of spare parts, so below we explain in simple terms their differences, advantages, and when it’s best to opt for each.

1. OE Spare Parts (Original Equipment)

OE spare parts are the original parts installed by the vehicle manufacturer on the production line. They are sold through the official network under the car manufacturer’s brand (Ford, BMW, Toyota, etc.).

Characteristics of OE Spare Parts:

  • They are exactly the same as those originally fitted to the vehicle.
  • Supplied in the car manufacturer’s packaging.
  • Meet all the standards, tolerances, and tests of the manufacturer.
  • Usually the most expensive option.
  •

When to Choose OE Spare Parts:

  • Repairs under warranty.
  • Premium or high-end vehicles.
  • When the customer wants exclusively “original parts.”

  1.  OEM Spare Parts (Original Equipment Manufacturer)

OEM parts are produced by the same suppliers that manufacture OE parts… but they are sold under their own brand.
Example: Bosch, Valeo, Delphi, Mahle, TRW, etc.

Characteristics of OEM Spare Parts:

  • Manufactured by the official supplier of the vehicle manufacturer.
  • Identical in specification to OE parts, though the packaging is different.
  • Usually more affordable than OE parts while offering the same or very similar quality.

When to Choose OEM Spare Parts:

  • When you want the same quality as the original at a more competitive price.
  • For workshops that want to guarantee high standards without increasing the final cost.
  • For preventive maintenance or repairs out of warranty.

  1. IAM Spare Parts (Independent Aftermarket)

IAM parts are produced by manufacturers independent of the original supplier. These parts are developed based on the vehicle’s specifications but do not come from OE suppliers.

Characteristics of IAM Spare Parts:

  • Wide range of prices and quality.
  • Manufactured by specialized brands in the independent market.
  • Quality may vary depending on the manufacturer, but many meet strict certifications.
  • Often the most cost-effective option.

When to Choose IAM Spare Parts:

  • Repairs on older vehicles or those with high mileage.
  • When the customer seeks the best value for money.
  • For routine maintenance operations where high costs are not justified.

Which Type of Spare Part is Best?

The answer is: it depends on the customer’s needs and the type of repair.

  • OE: the most premium and conservative option.
  • OEM: original quality at the best price.
  • IAM: economical, flexible, and highly competitive.
